What the judges and audience are looking for.

HEIVA I HONOLULU - GROUP RULES & REGULATIONS

The rules and regulations are designed to monitor the participants “Solo” performances in all 8 age groups.

DIVISION AGE GROUPS

a) Tamarii Division Age 2-3 yrs (exhibition ONLY)
  Tamahine -Tamaroa Age 4-6yrs - 7-10yrs
b) Taure’are’a Division Age 11-13yrs - 14-17yrs
  Tamahine – Tamaroa
c) Tane & Vahine Division Age 18-21yrs - 22-26yrs - 27-35yrs
d) Ta’ata Pa’ari Division Age 36yrs +

ELIMINATION PROCESS

The Solo competition will be implemented as follow:

FIRST & SECOND DAY - Thursday & Friday
March 13-14, 2008
PROCESS OF ELIMINATION:

This single elimination process consist of: 1st Round, Semi-Final round, & Final round.
The 1st Round & Semi-Final Round elimination will be done by groups of up to 5 participants at a time. The Final round will be done by up to 2 participants at a time.
Every contestant is required to dance in the 1st round.
Generally, the selected winners from the 1st round will move to the Semi-Final round.
Consequently, the top 4 tane & 4 vahine from the Semi-Final round will move to the Final round to compete for the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place winners within their own Division (age group).
However, any age group that has only up to 4 maximum contestants, they will not be required to compete in the Semi-Final round; instead, they will move to compete in the Final round.
Furthermore, any age group that ends up with 4 or less contestants left after the 1st round, they too will not be required to compete in the Semi-Final round either; instead, they will also move to compete in the final round.


THIRD DAY – Saturday March 15, 2008 – OVERALL:

The 1st place solo winners (tane & vahine) from each Division (age group) will compete for the Overall Tane
Award & Overall Vahine Award.

ELIGIBILITY

All dancers must be within their respective age categories in order to be eligible to participate.

This category is open to any pupu ori (dance group), studio, organizations, or dance company.
Independent soloist(s) may also participate.
No limit to enter. Pupu ori or groups may enter as many soloists as they wish.
Each solo contestant must fill in a registration form & submit it with the fee before the March 1, 2008 deadline.
Each registered contestant will be assigned a solo number.
A packet containing the soloist numbers & other information pertaining to the Heiva, will be given only to the Ra’atira pupu (Group Leader) at the ticket booth located on the side of the Waikiki shell box office.


COSTUME ( 1st & Semi-Final Round):

VAHINE - All vahine soloists are required to wear ankle length “more” (skirt) with no hip adornment during the first (1st) and second (2nd) round.
No layered more and no mid-calf.
TANE – All tane soloists are required to wear a “maro” with very little leg adornment during the first (1st) and second (2nd) round.
Each solo contestant must fill in a registration form & submit it with the fee before the March 1, 2008 deadline.
Each registered contestant will be assigned a solo number.
A packet containing the soloist numbers & other information pertaining to the Heiva, will be given only to the Ra’atira pupu (Group Leader) at the ticket booth located on the side of the Waikiki shell box office.

COSTUME (Final Round & Overall):

VAHINE – The final round and overall vahine soloists are required to wear a “pareo” (side tie only) with NO hip
Adornment and NO hand held item.
The length of the pareo should be NO shorter than 3” from the top of the knee. A two (2) points deduction for short pareo will be applied by the Judges.
TANE – The final and overall tane soloists are required to wear a “tihere” style pareo with very little or no leg adornment.

DRUMMING & TIME:

House drummers will be provided for all Ori solo participants. Dancing will be impromptu.
Tamarii and ta’ata pa’ari divisions – 1 ½ minute to 2 minutes maximum.
Taure’are’a tane & vahine divisions – 2 minutes to 2 ½ minutes maximum.
The top 3 male & female winners of each of the 8 Divisions (age groups) will each receive an award.
The Overall Male & Overall female winner will each receive an award.
