What the judges and audience are looking for.

HEIVA I HONOLULU - GROUP RULES & REGULATIONS

Rules and Regulations are designed to monitor a group’s performance in the “GROUP A LA CARTE” division, and in the “GROUP OVERALL” division.

The division categories are:
1. The Vahine Ahupurotu - (Sr & Jr. level)
2. The Mama Ruau Ahupurotu – (Master level only)
3. The Vahine Aparima – (Jr. level only)
4. The Pupu Ta’iri Toere (drumming) – (Sr. & Jr. level)
5. The Ote’a – Hura Ava Tau (Jr. level only)

Each division category contains three levels (where applicable):
1. The “HURA TAU” (Senior level)
2. The “HURA AVA TAU” (Junior level)
3. The “HURA METUA PA’ARII” (Master level)

GUIDELINES – A LA CARTE DIVISION

1. Vahine Ahupurotu Category - Hura Tau (Sr. level) and Hura Ava Tau (Jr. level):

A Group should have a minimum of ten (10) dancers, with no maximum limit.
This presentation must be done in a one (1) piece ankle length dress.
Each group must submit the Tahitian lyrics of their Ahupurotu song. Translating the lyrics into English is optional.
Music must be live for the Sr. level. CD music is acceptable for the Jr. level (no penalty).

TIME LIMIT:
Seven (7) minutes maximum. Time starts when the music begins.

PENALTY:
10 points deduction per minute over time limit.
10 points deducted for submitting lyrics after the deadline (March 1, 2008).
20 points deduction for not submitting lyrics.


2. Mama Ruau Ahupurotu Category – Hura Metua Pa’ari (Master level).

A Group must have a minimum of ten (10) dancers with no maximum limit.
This presentation must be done in a one (1) piece ankle length dress.
Minimum age is 45yrs.
Each group must submit the Tahitian lyrics of their Ahupurotu song. Translating the lyrics into English is optional.
Recorded or CD music is acceptable with no penalty.

TIME LIMIT:

Seven (7) minutes maximum. Time starts when the music begins.

PENALTY:
10 points deduction per minute over time limit.
10 points deducted for submitting lyrics after the deadline (March 1, 2008).
20 points deduction for not submitting lyrics.


3. Vahine Aparima Category – Hura Ava Tau (Jr. level only).

A Group must have a minimum of ten (10) dancers with no maximum limit.
Each group must submit the lyrics of their Aparima song. Translating the lyrics in English is optional.
Recorded or CD music is acceptable with no penalty.

TIME LIMIT:

Seven (7) minutes maximum. Time starts when the music begins.

PENALTY:
10 points deduction per minute over time limit.
10 points deducted for submitting lyrics after the deadline (March 1, 2008).
20 points deduction for not submitting lyrics.


4. Drumming Category – Hura Tau (Sr. level) & Hura Ava Tau (Jr. level):

A Group must have a minimum of five (5) musicians with no maximum limit.
Among other instruments, the following are mandated: To’ere, Fa’atete, Tari Parau, Pahu Tupa’i, Vivo and Ihara.
Among other beats, your entire creation must include at least six (6) of the following original beats: Pahae, Paea, Takoto, Puarata, Hitoto, PoraPora, Tiare Taporo, Samba, Bounty
Prior to their performance, the Group must submit to the Judges a list of the mandated beats included in performance.

TIME LIMIT:

Ten (10) minutes maximum. Time starts at the leader’s signal.

PENALTY:
10 points deduction per minute over time limit.
10 points deduction for each missing beat.
20 points deduction for not submitting lyrics.


5. Ote’a Category - Hura Ava Tau (Jr. level only):

An Ote’a Vahine only, or an Ote’a Tane only, or an Ote’a Amui (Vahine & Tane combined)
An Ote’a Aparima.
Pa’o and /or Hivinau are encouraged, but not mandated.
A Ra’atira must do an Orero in accordance with the theme.
A fact sheet of your presentation is mandated and should be submitted by deadline. (postmarked February 23, 2008)
A Group should have a minimum of (10) dancers, but no maximum number is required (unlimited).
Drumming CD is acceptable.

TIME LIMIT:

Fifteen (15) minutes maximum.
Time starts at the leader’s signal.

PENALTY:
10 points deduction per minute over time limit.
10 points deduction for submitting fact sheet after the deadline.
15 points deduction for submitting fact sheet during the event.
25 points deduction for not submitting a fact sheet.



GUIDELINES – GROUP OVERALL DIVISION

Group Overall Division - Hura Tau (Sr Level) & Hura Ava Tau (Jr level).

1. Your group must have a minimum of twenty (20) dancers, musicians not included, with no maximum limit.
2. Your group must perform continuously for a period of thirty (30) minutes maximum, according to the mandated criteria listed below: However, these criteria may be organized or choreographed in any order your group chooses to do so:
An Ote’a presentation with a theme.
All Music & Drumming must be live.
An Orero presentation by the Ra’atira or someone designated in the Group.
A Pa’oa & Hivinau (both are mandated).
A Group Aparima.
A Drumming dance by a couple (tane & vahine).
A Fact Sheet, which is a summary of your theme presentation, is mandated and should be submitted by deadline (postmarked February 23, 2008).

TIME LIMIT:

30 minutes maximum. Time starts when Ra’atira starts or when the music starts.

PENALTY:
10 points deduction per minute over time limit.
20 points deduction for submitting fact sheet after the deadline.
30 points deduction for submitting fact sheet during the event.
50 points deduction for not submitting a fact sheet.
